Good one. There is another version of this by R&B guys. Somewhat different lyric.

I think Andre Williams first did the “Bacon Fat” in 1956. On the Fortune 45 he is listed as co-author.

I am not sure how it got picked up by Northwest bands . .

I only heard the version by Thee Unusuals. Great band with Kathi McDonald and a crazy bass player who used to rock out on top of his Fender Showman amp. Did anybody except KPUG play their version?

Wasn’t that Lorrie Vitt’s (sp??) group with the big snake? I couldn’t get KJR in Bellingham very well so didn’t listen to Seattle radio much.

You got that right, but it was before The Unusuals, was a group called the Accents and then the Bellingham Accents. I have been in contact with Laurie and some others lately tracking down some of the early Bellingham rock groups. He ended up being a highly regarded PHD in herpetology (reptiles) and recently retired from university teaching and moved to Arizona. He has setup a youtube page, you can search for it, where he is working on new material. Back to Bacon Fat, on youtube, at least at the present time, somebody has uploaded a copy of that version of Bacon Fat and here is the link.

Good find!

As I remember the ’60s Bacon Fat was right up there with Louie Louie as songs all Northwest band had to have in their set lists.
