The number one song on the Billboard Top Singles chart on May 13 1981 was by Kim Carnes.
This is what you would call a monster hit.
Bette Davis Eyes was written by Donna Weiss and Jackie DeShannon . . in 1974 . . . when DeShannon recorded it . . . and no one noticed. The Kim Carnes’ version spent nine weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was Billboard’s biggest hit of the entire year for 1981. The recording won the 1982 Grammy Awards for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
This is a good opportunity for me to explain the difference between Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the Grammies.
