I was listening to a Tom Murphy air check today . . .
KJR, Tom Murphy, 1969
Tom arrived at KJR from Portland in September of 1965. My reaction: “Whoa . . . who is this guy?” Tiger Tom (a name he, thankfully, left in the Rose City) didn’t sound like anybody else on the station. But Sweet Thomas grew on every one . . . and soon he became World Famous Tom Murphy. Listen to hear what I mean.
In September of 1968 Pat O’Day left the afternoon slot and Tom moved from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. to 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and this precipitated my move to KJR from Spokane. In early 1971 Tom headed for Los Angeles . . . the lure of tinsel town was too much.
The last time Tom was heard in Seattle was during the KJR reunion at KJR-FM in the spring of 1995.
