June 2017 Update :: Jimi Hendrix Park a chance to reflect on the artistry, talent from Seattle’s Central District

Shortly after I got back to KZOK in the spring of 1980 I started to work on my long held idea of establishing a memorial for the biggest rock star to come out of Seattle. I was thinking big . . a park or a street name. The opposition from the city establishment was fierce. The city, the park department, were all very resistant to endorsing the life style and/or achievements of drugged out hippie guitar player.

We raised nearly $30,000 selling Jimi Hendrix Memorial buttons (That would be almost $100,000 in today’s dollars). The closest we got to a park was a “view point” at Woodland park.

This year the idea has resurfaced. Seemingly KZOK is no longer involved . . . but it sounds like attitudes have changed. Seattle Times: Vision for Hendrix Park as vibrant as namesake. HendrixMemorial
