Norm Gregory Radio Scrapbook: Charlie & Ty & Mary Retire, 1997

Charlie Brown, a familiar name to KJR radio listeners through out the 1970s, in the early ’80s teamed up with Ty Flint . . and it turned out to be a long-running morning show on KUBE-FM and KJR-FM (and a very clever KUBE/KJR-FM simulcast). Somewhere along the way, during the KUBE years, Mary White became an integral part of their morning team. In September 1997, Charlie retired . . . and before they themselves realized it Ty and Mary were retired.

It wasn’t long before the inexperience programming manager realized that it would have made more sense to keep Ty and Mary to team with me in the mornings during at least a transition period before the next morning guy showed up (That ended up being Gary Bryan).

Is it true Ty became a bus driver after his KJR gig ended?

It is true that Ty was a big fan of buses (of all kinds). One of his cherish possessions was an old coin box from a Seattle Metro bus.

He moved Phoenix and went to work for Greyhound . . . but as a ticket seller . . . his poor eyesight prevented him from passing the driving test.
