in Movies, What I Watched

I have somewhere an audio clip of Churchill citing Hitler’s three major blunders that cost his forces the war. As I recall they were (1) failure to stop the evacuation of British expeditionary forces that were trapped at Dunkirk, (2) underestimating the tenacity of the RAF during the Battle of Britain, (3) his delusional idea that the Axis could attack Russia and strategically and militarily survive the frigid and deadly Russian winter.

Why the Germans held back in attacking the British and French troops trapped at Dunkirk has been debated for decades by historians. The one argument I favor is that Hitler thought the Brits would come to the negotiating table if he gave them a break. Churchill, who just came into office a couple weeks earlier, wasn’t interested.

By the way, the movie doesn’t tell the story of the 100,000 UK and French troops who were captured on the French coast… and went on to be badly treated by the Germans.
