Any idea of what these hit songs have common?
Answer: They were all top ten hits this week in 1944.

Here is the last 30 minutes of the T.A.M.I show which was broadcast to selected theaters around the U.S. from the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, October 1964. Someone talked the Rolling Stones into following James Brown. They did the best they could. By the way, this clip will demonstrate why those of us who remembered James Brown in his prime weren’t that knocked out by Michael Jackson.

To put these performances in context:

James Brown’s current hit was “Out Of Sight” (which starts his four song set). But he hadn’t really crossed over yet. His first Billboard top ten hit, “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag” would come the following summer.

Chart wise the Stones were a hotter act. “Time Is On My Side” (third song of their set) was a top ten hit (their first) at the time of the show. Interestingly, the second song of their site, “Off The Hook” was new and unknown at the time. It would be included on their 3rd album, “The Rolling Stones, Now” which came out March 1965. Their first #1 “(I Can’t No) Satisfaction” would come in summer of 1965 some eight months later.

(Video: Watch this video on the post page)

I have had a bootleg copy of the concert for years. The quality was mediocre. There had never been an authorized home video release until the DVD release in March 2010 . . and the quality of the so called Electronovision, using some of the first high-definition video cameras, comes through.
