Finally the much anticipated movie The Lovely Bones opens this weekend in Seattle (and in most other cities). It has been in very limited release for the last month.
When I saw it a couple weeks ago, I realized there is an audience for Bones but it may be a very limited audience.

And I am not real familiar with movies in the Fantasy / Thriller genre. But I will predict that this film, despite negative reviews, will be popular with young women (of all ages). I did read the book last summer which I didn’t really get. Until now. The movie made me understand the story. It wasn’t really about catching the guy. Without spoiling the ending I will just say the movie ends differently than the book. Good performances from Saoirse Ronan and Stanley Tucci. Nice support from Susan Sarandon and Rachel Weisz.

This is the first review of The Lovely Bones. I have read the book; didn’t like it that much, but am curious on how they could make a movie out of the story. Most of the book’s plot is a narrative of a young girl in heaven. Variety, below, calls the Peter Jackson movie a “significant artistic disappointment.”

Peter Jackson’s infatuation with fancy visual effects mortally wounds “The Lovely Bones.” Alice Sebold’s cheerily melancholy bestseller, centered upon a 14-year-old girl who narrates the story from heaven after having been brutally murdered, provides almost ready-made bigscreen material. But Jackson undermines solid work from a good cast with show-offy celestial evocations that severely disrupt the emotional connections with the characters. The book’s rep, the names of Jackson and exec producer Steven Spielberg, and a mighty year-end push by Paramount/DreamWorks will likely put this over with the public to a substantial extent, but it still rates as a significant artistic disappointment. ● More from: Read Variety’s Analysis Of The Movie The Lovely Bones

Oscar Shakeout: ‘Lovely Bones’ May Be Broken

The reviews are in, and Peter Jackson’s “The Lovely Bones” did not go over well tonight in London. Or anywhere else. ● More from: The Hollywood Reporter
