Blitz – Jason Statham again in the tough guy role. Has he ever played anything else? This time he’s a copper and this time he has a talented cast around him: David Morrissey, Aidan Gillen (remember the Irish guy who played the mayor of Baltimore in The Wire who I mention earlier in a UK TV series) and Paddy Considine. Which is the only reason I watched it. You see Detective Sergeant Porter Nash (Considine) is in charge of investigating a cop killer (Gillen – this Irishman can play anybody – I have become a big fan) case and goes by the book. Detective Sergeant Tom Brant (Statham) has other methods but they team up. The killer is in contact with a “hack” journalist (Morrissey) who publishes his story. It’s a UK release and only on DVD in the U.S. next month. I am baffled . . . Blitz is twice as good as most of the Statham crap released in the U.S. [ RT ]
The Last Detective – He is called the “Last Detective” because he is the last Detective Constable his superiors would assign to a case. DC “Dangerous” Davies always gets the cases no one else wants–and no one notices when he eventually succeeds. And he has to put up with constant crap and kidding from fellow detectives. This guy is at other end of the UK cop spectrum. As far as you can get from Luther, Kurt Wallander or Jonah Gabriel. But the guy grew on me after three episodes. There are many more to come out of 2003 and beyond; I may seek them out. . . . [ Netfilx ]
Whale Wars – You can have your Deadliest Catch. This war against Mother Nature and the Japanese whaling fleet takes place at the other pole. I have watched the first 8 episodes of season 4 and was riveted the whole way following the three Sea Shepard vessels as the try to slow down the whale hunters’ harpoon ships to helping New Zealand Search and Rescue find vessels in trouble. This is a reality show, on Animal Plant, that means something. [ Official Site ]
This is a list of the last three major video items I have watched on my home HD TV (excluding MLB games).
