The holiday lull seems to have set in on broadcast. With an entire lineup of repeats, CBS finished first last night, as only NBC offered all-original programming.

Outlook for radio in 2010: More struggle

Declines in ad spending will ease next year

Along with newspapers and magazines, radio has been particularly hard hit by the recession.

Radio advertising hasn’t seen a year-to-year rise in some two and a half years, and year to date in 2009 ad spending is off another 22.8 percent, according to TNS Media Intelligence. ● More from: Media Life Magazine

Stern’s threat to quit Sirius could be empty talk

Howard Stern is threatening to leave Sirius XM Radio Inc. now that the shock jock and the satellite radio provider are getting set to enter contract talks in 2010.

That threat probably seems less daunting to Sirius than it once would have. Sirius originally wanted Stern so badly that it gave him the most lucrative radio contract ever, a five-year deal that started in 2006 and paid him $500 million in cash and stock. ● More from: The Associated Press

Outlook for cable in 2010: Up and up

Recovery may already be setting in for the medium

Only a handful of media have held up well during this recession, and cable television is certainly one of them.

Third-quarter numbers suggest that the recovery so many other media are hoping for has already begun for cable. Next year should bring even better advertising numbers, as well as a continuing rise in viewership, buzz and awards for both basic and premium cable networks. ● More from: Media Life Magazine
