I have been perversely watching a couple of your vids. I don’t know if it’s because they are horribly amateurish or cleverly entertaining. At first I thought it was the former, but now after watching a few, I’ve come around to the feeling it’s the latter. Out of the internet grows another fascinating modicum of communication.
I remember the UPI teletype at KYYX Seattle dinging loudly that August afternoon with news of Elvis. Robin Mitchell broke into the automation with the live bulletin. Then, he holed himself up in the production room for 18 hours straight, producing an excellent retrospective that I have somewhere on 10” reels and need to digitize.
Let’s here more about who the other guy there is. Gary ? Does he have a last name?
I saw Elvis twice at the Denver Coliseum in the early 70’s. Norm, I share your opinion that he treated his “standards” a little lightly. As I recall he really messed with the monologue during “Love Me Tender”.
Still a great show. I’m with Gary on the rockabilly thing. It would’ve been fun to see what would’ve happened had he dumped the Colonel in the early sixties and stayed true to his roots.
In a related topic…I actually passed on the chance to see the Beatles at Red Rocks because they were not cool with guys. The Beatles were a girls group.
Just a follow up opinion on the early Elvis thing. I still think the most electrifying and the most representative of his early sound is “Trying to Get to You” on the first RCA album.
Yeah Dan, no show biz here (had enough of that). It’s just a couple of aging, out of shape, white guys sitting around yakking about stuff that we would be yakking about if the camera wasn’t on.
